The 2012 Cochrane review of 1945 participants found a non-significant mean difference of just -0.04 kg in the six trials conducted outside Japan and judged any pooled effect not clinically important; the 2024 GRADE-assessed dose-response meta-analysis of 3802 participants found only -0.64 kg body mass with low-to-moderate certainty, and earlier meta-analyses confirm that catechins alone (without caffeine) produce no significant anthropometric benefit. Examine independently graded all primary clinical weight outcomes (Weight, Body Fat) D = No effect across large samples. Every clinic and society source examined — Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, and The Obesity Society — explicitly declines to recommend green tea extract for weight loss, favoring lifestyle change. Compounding this, green tea extract carries a well-established dose-related hepatotoxicity overhang (NIH LiverTox grade A, EFSA 800 mg/day EGCG transaminase threshold, Taiwan TFDA 300 mg/day cap), making a trivial benefit unacceptable against a real safety risk. Grade D is warranted: the weight-loss claim is clinically negligible and over-marketed.
