The human evidence base for bromelain in exercise recovery is small, preliminary, and inconsistent. Only a handful of RCTs exist (n=15-39), and most administer multi-enzyme proteolytic blends rather than isolated bromelain, so bromelain's specific contribution cannot be separated. Subjective outcomes (fatigue, isometric strength) occasionally favor supplementation, but objective muscle-damage markers such as CK, myoglobin and perceived soreness are consistently null, and a direct head-to-head RCT (PMID 12466693) found neither bromelain nor ibuprofen effective for DOMS. No sports-medicine society (ACSM, ISSN) endorses or even addresses bromelain for recovery, and Mayo Clinic explicitly states there is no good scientific evidence for this use. This pattern of sparse, low-to-moderate-quality, conflicting trials with no authoritative endorsement supports a Grade C: weak/preliminary evidence with possible but unproven benefit.
