The evidence for pomegranate as an exercise-recovery aid is small, inconsistent and uncertain rather than strong or absent. The largest and most recent meta-analysis (PMID 40034870, 2025, 10 studies, n=198, moderate quality) found no significant effect on muscle soreness, creatine kinase, myoglobin, CRP or lactate, with only an isolated immediate post-exercise LDH reduction. Positive findings come exclusively from small, low-quality early RCTs (n=9 to n=17) concentrated in trained individuals and elbow-flexor muscles, with effects appearing dose- and timing-dependent; a 36-participant double-blind RCT in untrained men found no benefit. Examine grades the representative primary clinical outcome (Muscle Soreness) D and surrogate markers C, all from single one-participant table rows. No institutional layer (Mayo, Cleveland, Harvard) or sports-medicine society (ACSM, ISSN) endorses it, with ISSN explicitly classing it as an emerging ingredient needing more research. A signal of conditional, possibly short-term benefit exists but falls well short of consistent high-quality support, warranting grade C.

Tart cherry and pomegranate supplementations enhance recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage: a systematic review
