This is yeast (1,3)-(1,6)-beta-glucan (e.g. Wellmune, Leiber) for common cold / URTI. A 13-RCT meta-analysis (PMID 33900466) reports a favourable pooled effect on URTI incidence (OR 0.345), episode count and duration, but explicitly flags high heterogeneity and few small trials; the body of evidence is internally inconsistent because the largest and methodologically strongest single RCT (n=299, 2019) found NO reduction in cold incidence or global severity, with only a modest early physical-symptom benefit. The single most damning feature is pervasive conflict of interest: nearly every trial is funded by a beta-glucan manufacturer (Leiber GmbH, Wellmune/Biothera/Kerry) or run by contract research organisations, which inflates the apparent pooled signal. EFSA reviewed exactly these immune and common-cold claims and rejected them twice (2010 Yestimun immune claim, 2013 common-cold claim), citing non-validated cold questionnaires and statistical limitations, and no infectious-disease authority (CDC, IDSA) endorses it while major clinics (Mayo, Cleveland, Harvard) do not address it. I therefore grade C rather than Examine's B: the signal is real but small, manufacturer-funded and inconsistent across the best trials, which warrants a one-notch downgrade for COI and heterogeneity.
