Verdict: Colostrum does not improve exercise recovery

Bovine colostrum is not an effective exercise-recovery aid: the most direct recovery endpoints show no benefit, the one positive recovery trial was very small and industry-funded, and no major clinic or sports-medicine body endorses it for this use.

The pooled evidence is weak and largely null on the outcomes that matter for recovery. A 2021 narrative review (PMID 34073917) concluded there is "limited evidence for effects on body composition and physical performance," and a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 RCTs in 239 athletes (PMID 32276466) found "no or a fairly low impact" on immune markers; that meta-analysis was industry-funded (Nutricia).

The only trial directly showing faster recovery was a 6-week soccer-player RCT (PMID 28285432) with just 18 participants at a low 3.2 g/day dose, funded by a supplement company with a paid-consultant author and compared against whey rather than placebo — too small and conflicted to carry the claim. A 2024 meta-analysis (PMID 38361147) showed reduced intestinal permeability, but that is a surrogate gut-barrier marker, not a muscle-recovery endpoint.

Authorities reinforce the negative read. The FDA issued warning letters stating colostrum products are "not generally recognized as safe and effective" for their claimed uses, EFSA rejected its bovine-colostrum health claims, and Mayo Clinic notes the research is "still in early stages." The "disputed" label reflects a single composite Examine row hinting at benefit while the underlying muscle-soreness and protein-synthesis endpoints show none; WADA also cautions athletes that colostrum naturally contains IGF-1.

Bovine Colostrum in Increased Intestinal Permeability in Healthy Athletes and Patients: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials
