Serratiopeptidase: a systematic review of the existing evidence
Finding: Identified 24 clinical efficacy studies and 11 RCTs across mixed indications (mainly ENT, dental, post-surgical). Concluded the existing scientific evidence for serratiopeptidase is insufficient to support its use as an analgesic and health supplement; most studies graded as poor methodology (small samples, poorly defined enrollment/outcomes, unclear statistics, short duration). No dedicated osteoarthritis or joint-pain trial identified.

Finding: Reviews proposed anti-inflammatory, antiedemic and fibrinolytic activity. States robust clinical evidence is lacking and that data on antiatherosclerotic activity, safety, tolerability, efficacy and mechanism of action are still required. Notes the 2011 voluntary withdrawal of Danzen/Dasen serratiopeptidase tablets in Japan after failure to show efficacy superior to placebo. No osteoarthritis-specific efficacy data presented.
