Sea Moss (Irish Moss) for Skin Health

Verdict: No proof sea moss benefits skin

There is no clinical evidence that sea moss (Irish moss, Chondrus crispus) improves skin health, whether taken orally or applied topically. Marketing claims about collagen support and "92 minerals" are extrapolated from its nutrient content, not demonstrated in any human study.

U ⚫ U Unverified Insufficient Evidence

🔬Why this grade7-layer evidence engine

The grade is Unverified because not a single human trial has tested sea moss for any skin outcome—acne, hydration, wrinkles, dermatitis, or wound healing. A 2024 systematic review of the entire Chondrus genus (PMID 38248672) found only one clinical study in the literature (an iota-carrageenan nasal spray for COVID-19, unrelated to skin); its only skin-relevant data came from a mouse atopic-dermatitis model of a different species. A 2023 review of 25 human seaweed trials (PMID 37545570) found zero that examined skin endpoints.

The remaining study (PMID 36355018) only measured the chemical stability of cosmetic formulations containing C. crispus extract, not any effect on real skin. With no efficacy data, mainstream sources withhold endorsement: the NIH LactMed monograph states plainly that 'no medicinal value has been proven,' and Mayo Clinic, Harvard, and the dermatology and family-medicine societies do not address sea moss for skin at all.

Regulators raise safety concerns rather than support. The FDA recognizes only the derived additive carrageenan as a food thickener, not whole sea moss as a supplement, and EFSA warns that seaweed intake can push iodine and heavy-metal (cadmium, arsenic) exposure above safe limits. High, variable iodine also poses thyroid risks and interacts with medications such as levothyroxine.

An Update on the Chemical Constituents and Biological Properties of Selected Species of an Underpinned Genus of Red Algae: Chondrus
PMID: 38248672 2024 系統性回顧
Finding: Only ONE clinical study identified across all Chondrus spp. literature - an iota-carrageenan nasal spray RCT for COVID-19 (respiratory, not skin). Skin-related evidence is limited to a single MOUSE study using Mazzaella canaliculata (formerly C. canaliculatus, not C. crispus) ethanolic extract that suppressed DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis lesions and reduced IFN-gamma/IL-4 - no human skin RCT exists.

Physicochemical Evaluation of Personal Care Products Developed with Chondrus crispus Fractions Processed by Ecofriendly Methodologies
PMID: 36355018 2022 Cross-sectional
Finding: C. crispus extract-enriched personal care formulations showed similar or better physicochemical, color, and viscous stability than products with synthetic antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol, BHT). NOT a clinical efficacy study on human skin - product formulation/stability only.
🟠 Limited quality Government Effect size: Formulation chemistry only; no clinical skin outcome measured

Effects of whole seaweed consumption on humans: current evidence from randomized-controlled intervention trials, knowledge gaps, and limitations
PMID: 37545570 2023 系統性回顧
Finding: Across 25 human seaweed RCTs identified, ZERO investigated skin/dermatological outcomes. Authors explicitly state none of the eligible RCTs studied disease risk; outcomes were limited to cardiometabolic, thyroid, urinary iodine, and oxidative-stress markers.
Effect size: Not applicable - no skin outcome studied
