Meta-analysis: the effect of supplementation with lactoferrin on eradication rates and adverse events during Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy
Finding: Adding lactoferrin raised ITT eradication from 74.44% to 86.57% (OR 2.26, 95% CI 1.70-3.00) and lowered total adverse events from 16.28% to 9.05%, driven by less nausea (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.04-0.54).
View on PubMed Meta-analysis: efficacy of bovine lactoferrin in Helicobacter pylori eradication
Finding: Five RCTs (n=682; LF 316 vs control 366) gave a pooled ITT eradication OR of 2.22 (95% CI 1.44-3.44, P=0.0003; risk difference +0.11, 95% CI 0.05-0.16) with NO significant difference in adverse effects, and the authors explicitly call the evidence limited.
View on PubMed Bovine lactoferrin for Helicobacter pylori eradication: an open, randomized, multicentre study
Finding: Triple therapy plus CONCURRENT lactoferrin achieved 90% eradication vs 77% for triple therapy alone and only 73% when lactoferrin was given as 7-day pretreatment before triple therapy (chi-square P<0.01); adverse events were similar across arms (~8-9.5%, P=0.1).
View on PubMed Efficacy of Lactoferrin with Standard Triple Therapy or Sequential Therapy for Helicobacter pylori Eradication: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Finding: Lactoferrin add-on raised per-protocol eradication for triple therapy (85.6% vs 70.3%, P=.014) and for sequential therapy (94.5% vs 82.8%, P=.013), with no severe adverse reactions and minor side effects causing discontinuation in 3.3%.
