Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Hair Loss Telogen

Verdict: Unverified for telogen effluvium specifically

There is not enough evidence to say low-level laser therapy (LLLT) works for telogen effluvium. The few available studies are small, uncontrolled, and the one published systematic review found LLLT "did not significantly enhance outcomes" for this type of shedding.

U ⚫ U Unverified Insufficient Evidence

🔬Why this grade7-layer evidence engine

The grade reflects an almost empty evidence base for this specific condition. No sham-controlled randomized trial of LLLT for telogen effluvium exists. The only prospective data come from a 20-patient single-arm cohort (PMID 33713522) whose 7-person telogen-effluvium subgroup gained about 8.5% more hairs but at P=0.143 — not statistically significant, even though the androgenetic-alopecia subgroup in the same study did improve.

A 2024 systematic review of 3,098 patients (PMID 39502132) is the highest-tier source, and it cuts against efficacy: only 1 of 58 included studies addressed telogen effluvium, and the authors explicitly concluded LLLT 'did not significantly enhance outcomes in telogen effluvium treatment.' With one negative high-tier source and no positive one, nothing supports a recommendation.

Regulators and clinicians reinforce the caution. The US FDA 510(k) clearance for these laser devices is limited to 'Treatment of androgenetic alopecia' — telogen effluvium is not a cleared indication. Harvard Health states 'No treatment for active telogen effluvium has been proven effective,' and the American Academy of Dermatology notes the hair usually regrows 'once the cause of the hair loss has been addressed,' since the condition is self-limiting — which also confounds any uncontrolled 'improvement.'

Results of low-level laser therapy in the treatment of hair growth: An Egyptian experience
PMID: 33713522 2021 Cohort n = 20
Finding: TE subgroup (n=7): baseline hair count 271.2 ± 39.0 vs post-treatment 294.2 ± 38.1 (P=0.143) — NOT statistically significant. AGA subgroup did show significance; TE did not.

Efficacy and Safety of Laser Therapy and Phototherapy in Cicatricial and NonCicatricial Alopecia: A Systematic Review Study
PMID: 39502132 2024 系統性回顧 n = 3,098
Finding: Authors explicitly conclude LLLT 'did not significantly enhance outcomes in telogen effluvium treatment'; TE represented by only 1 of 58 included studies, precluding meta-analytic pooling for TE.
