Clinician guidelines for treatment of psychiatric disorders with nutraceuticals/phytoceuticals: WFSBP & CANMAT Taskforce
PMID: 35311615 2022 系統性回顧
Finding: The WFSBP/CANMAT taskforce found NO nutraceutical/phytoceutical with sufficient evidence for any anxiety-related disorder beyond ashwagandha, galphimia and lavender; curcumin was provisionally recommended (++) ONLY for unipolar depression and was not listed for anxiety.
🟢 High quality Academic Effect size: Curcumin = '++ Provisionally Recommended' for unipolar depression only; not recommended / not listed for anxiety disorders

Potential therapeutic benefits of curcumin in depression or anxiety induced by chronic diseases: a systematic review of mechanistic and clinical evidence
PMID: 40918536 2025 統合分析 n = 1,123
Finding: Across 15 RCTs (n=1,123) curcumin produced a small but statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms (SMD -0.22, 95% CI -0.40 to -0.05, p=0.01) with no heterogeneity in the anxiety subgroup (I2=0%).
Academic Effect size: SMD -0.22 (95% CI -0.40 to -0.05; p=0.01; I2=0%) for anxiety

Effect of curcumin supplementation on symptoms of anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
PMID: 38857152 2024 統合分析 n = 567
Finding: Pooling 8 RCTs (n=567) gave a very large reduction in anxiety symptoms (SMD -1.56, 95% CI -2.48 to -0.64, p<0.001) but with extreme heterogeneity (I2=95.6%), indicating likely small-study/publication bias and an unreliable effect magnitude.
🟠 Limited quality Academic Effect size: SMD -1.56 (95% CI -2.48 to -0.64; p<0.001; I2=95.6%)

An investigation of the effects of curcumin on anxiety and depression in obese individuals: A randomized controlled trial
PMID: 25776839 2015 RCT (double-blind) n = 30
Finding: In 30 obese adults, curcumin significantly reduced BAI anxiety scores (P=0.03) but had no effect on BDI depression scores (P=0.7); the population was obese individuals, not an anxiety-disorder cohort.
🟠 Limited quality Academic Effect size: BAI reduction P=0.03 (no numeric SMD reported); BDI P=0.7 (null)

The Effect of Adding Curcumin to Sertraline in the Treatment of Severe Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial
PMID: 37071480 2023 RCT (double-blind) n = 45
Finding: Adding 40 mg/day curcumin to sertraline in 45 severe MDD patients produced no significant between-group difference in anxiety or depression over 8 weeks (P>0.05); anxiety was numerically lower in the curcumin arm but not significant.
Academic Effect size: No significant between-group difference (P>0.05) for anxiety or depression
